After what felt like a long journey of scheduling and rescheduling, our original late fall portrait session became a winter session, and then eventually a beautiful spring session. Looking back, I can honestly say it was worth every bit of the six-month wait.
Working Around a Toddler's Schedule
Life with young children is wonderfully unpredictable. Between changing weather, unexpected illnesses, nap schedules, and the many moving pieces that come with family life, plans don't always unfold the way we expect. One thing I've learned over the years as a family photographer serving Canton, the South Shore, and Greater Boston is that creating a relaxed, enjoyable experience means working with your child's schedule not against it. Sometimes that means waiting a little longer for the right season or choosing a time of day when your little one is happiest.typically the mornings are the best for young children. The extra flexibility is almost always rewarded with genuine smiles, happy memories, and beautiful photographs.
Celebrating the Joy of Being Two
Like many two-year-olds, Collin was full of energy, curiosity, and personality. He kept me on my toes as I followed him around with my camera, capturing every smile, expression, and little adventure. While it certainly required a bit of running, I loved every minute of it. These are the moments that define toddlerhood—the joyful exploration, the spontaneous laughter, and the endless curiosity—and they're exactly the memories I love preserving for families.
How We Create Natural, Candid Family Portraits
One of the things parents tell me most often is that they want candid moments captured during their family session. The beautiful thing is that candid moments aren't something we force—they naturally unfold when families are simply enjoying one another.
Rather than asking Collin to sit perfectly still and smile at the camera, we spent the session playing together. Mom and Dad tickled him, lifted him high into the sky, held his hands as they walked together, explored the beautiful surroundings, and simply enjoyed being present with their little boy. I offered gentle prompts along the way, allowing their interactions to unfold naturally while I documented the laughter, hugs, playful expressions, and the quiet in-between moments that often become a family's favorite photographs.
Why I Love Photographing Young Families
What I love most about photographing young families is that the session isn't about creating perfect poses—it's about creating space for genuine connection. As parents focus on loving, playing, and making memories with their children, I get the privilege of documenting the story that's unfolding in front of me.
Years from now, these photographs won't simply remind them of what they looked like. They'll remember the tiny hands reaching up to Mom and Dad, the giggles after being tickled, the excitement of being lifted into the air, the walks hand in hand, and the overwhelming feeling of being completely loved. Those are the memories that deserve to be preserved.
It's also one of the reasons family portraits are so meaningful. Parents are so often the ones behind the camera, capturing everyone else's memories.
